Perseverance and Determination Lead to a Brighter Future

Christina received her high school diploma in June, a moment reflective of two years of perseverance and determination, working towards building a positive future for herself and her daughter Jenny.

Christina’s path wasn’t always smooth, but she found encouragement when she started her journey in the Youth Parent Program at Camino Wellbeing + Mental Health surrounded by a group of people who supported her.

Christina decided to embark on a short vacation with her daughter Jenny, but what was meant to be a brief trip turned into a much longer stay, away from the support system she knew and valued.

During the time away, Christina learned many important lessons and gained experiences that changed her outlook on life. She returned home a drastically different young woman, with a new perspective and determined to complete her high school graduation requirements. Christina worked tirelessly, with support from her teachers, to earn her high school diploma.

Christina enrolled in a college-level dual credit course that was demanding in many ways, including requiring additional childcare that wasn’t easily available to her. The team at Camino worked tirelessly to find Christina the right childcare solution. Knowing that Jenny was safe and well taken care of provided Christina with the peace of mind to focus on her studies.

The challenges of this commitment wore on Christina at times. At one point she almost walked away from her schooling altogether but her teachers, counsellor, and support workers at Camino walked alongside her, holding her accountable, coaching and cheering her on, reminding her of her goals, and encouraging her to keep going.

With this encouragement and the support of her Camino team, Christina found the strength to keep going. Despite the struggles, she not only completed her dual credit course, but also scored nearly perfect on one of the essays in this course. This was an accomplishment that filled her with immense pride.

Christina successfully completed all her high school credits and has chosen her post-secondary path after being accepted into three college programs. She is excited for what the future will bring for her and Jenny. Christina’s journey was recognized with the Perseverance Award at graduation, celebrating her determination. She was also a recipient of the Follett Scholarship, a scholarship fund which has been in place for many years and has been made possible by many caring community members who are dedicated to supporting young parents, like Christina, in pursuit of post-secondary education.

Christina’s path to graduation wasn’t without hurdles, but her strength and determination enabled her to take the steps to create a brighter future for herself and her daughter.
