What We Do

Affirming. Supporting. Belonging. Since 2005.

There was a need 20 years ago. There is a need now. And our commitment continues: To create a community where all identities are seen, celebrated, and safe to be visible—not just in June, but all year round.

OK2BME consists of three unique areas including
  • Confidential counselling services (in person or online) for 2SLGBTQIA+ children, youth, and families;

  • Groups including weekly OK2BME youth groups for individuals 12-18, and more;

  • Public education, consulting and training around 2SLGBTQIA+ issues.

OK2BME’s keystone events annually are the Pride Prom and Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Conference.

Why It Matters

Queer and trans individuals experience a range of mental health challenges, at disproportionately higher rates - not due to 2SLGBTQIA+ identities themselves but stigma, discrimination, and the oppression of 2SLGBTQIA+ people. Trans people are particularly vulnerable.

Thousands have found support and connection through OK2BME. Research shows that affirming mental health care and belonging can reduce the risks of depression, anxiety, and suicide for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth.

Every time someone feels seen, supported, or celebrated through this work, we move closer to a community where all people can thrive.

How It All Started

OK2BME began in 2005 as a bold collaboration between Camino Wellbeing + Mental Health (KW Counselling Services at the time) and Family and Children’s Services of Waterloo Region, to address the unique needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. The program has grown into a cornerstone of community support, connection, and pride.

The program is rooted in the belief that every person deserves to feel seen, heard, supported, and celebrated.

For 20 years, OK2BME has been a leader in building Waterloo Region’s community capacity to meet the needs of 2SLGBTQIA+ young people and the broader 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
